Remediation Reflection

This remediation assignment was a little challenging but overall an easier assignment than I would have thought. I had to take my research paper, and turn it into some sort of media. I chose to make my research paper into a power point with a voice offer. Some of my strengths during this remediation assignment were creating the actual power point. In my opinion, power points are more fun and more visual when you are presenting an idea. I liked putting images along with my words and also making the power point bright and vibrant so that it would draw more attention to the topic I was speaking on. Some challenges for me while creating this power point was the voice over. I did not want to seem as if I was rambling on and on, but I also wanted to speak on as much information that I could. I also wanted my voice over to sound natural and non-rehearsed. I took each paragraph from my research paper and summarized them into terms that were easy to understand, and would not bore the viewer of my assignment. In the end, it made my voice over sound a lot more natural than just reading something word for word. I liked the remediation assignment because we do not use a whole lot of media projects when it comes to English courses. Writing numerous papers all semester starts to become tedious and it is refreshing to do an assignment that is a little different. 

Remediation

For the remediation assignment, I am taking my already written research paper and transforming it into another format. My research paper is about how I feel as if budget cuts towards Planned Parenthood would not be a smart idea for our government and society. To best portray my point in another format, I feel as if an advertisement would work best. On my advertisement I could make point out facts as to why the government shouldn't cut this funding. It will almost be like propaganda in a way because I will be trying to catch the attention of every day people.

                                                    Is funding for birth control necessary and effective?
1. Introduction
- Cuts are being made when it comes to funding places like Planned Parenthood and other clinics that offer free birth control. Are these clinics effective in preventing a rising number in teenage pregnancies, or should these funds continue being cut?

2. Statistics and Facts about teenage pregnancy in the United States.
- Are there rising numbers over the last decade?
- Do teenage pregnancies cost the government money and funding when it comes to welfare or other government assisting programs?

3. Presenting one side: Continue to cut funding

4. Presenting the opposing side of how government funding is needed to lower the amount of teenage pregnancies in the United States.

5. Argue one against the other.
- Government assisting and funding prevented X amount of pregnancies and also provides birth control to X amount of people.
-Talk about how its a very conterversial topic because it ties in with abortion and other big topics in our society, which is why there is a very divided opinion on this topic.

6.  I feel as if planned parenthood and other programs like this one have helped a lot of teenagers that didnt have assistance for recieving birth control. Taking this funding away would be very upsetting for some ommunities.

Research paper topic

A topic I would look into is free birth control in the United States. There have been budget cuts and certain places like planned parenthood, are being taken away or cut back. I want to talk about how much money it costs the government to keep these places funded. I would also like to research statistics on how many teen pregnancies are prevented because of these free birth control facilities. Also, would their be a rise in teen pregnancies if taken away? Would more teen pregnancies cause an increase in the amount of women on welfare or other government based assistance. Would cutting funds in this area help or hurt our government?

There were eight sources cited by Johnson. Johnsons sources were a lot of different readings that had been done. These readings were incorporated with researching for this essay. You can know a lot of these sources are credible because they are associations, educational documents, or documents written by persons with a PHD or a high level of education. How much education a person has had can determine how well we as readers, trust and believe their writing.

Writing in the Medical Field

            In college, a lot of writing is involved no matter what area of study you are involved in. Whether its essays for an English course, reports from a biology course, or simply just taking notes in class, writing is always a big part of earning your degree. Although this is all true, I have never stopped to think about how much writing I will be doing once I have my career. Studying the medical field means there are numerous jobs I could have. I could be a pharmacist, a nurse, or even a surgeon. Surprisingly, writing is very important in the medical field.

            According to owl.english.purdue.edu, “Medical writing is an interdisciplinary field that applies knowledge of both rhetoric and science to enhance reader understanding of medical phenomena.” The main purpose of medical writing is to get information out whether it is to the public, or to another doctor. “Nevertheless, nearly all medical writers share a like-minded value: to articulate medical information to their readers in the most effective ways possible,” according to owl.english.purdue.edu. Medical writers have to take important information that uses medical terminology, and put it into terms that the everyday reader can understand. Unless you’re studying in the medical field, it is almost impossible to understand the terminology doctor’s use, so it is very important that they are efficient in their writing skills and translating important information.

An example of translating information for the public is:

Desensitization (converse of secondary sensitization) is distinguished from habituation (converse of primary sensitization) by the explicit expression of memory rebound and recovery effects in the post-stimulation response.

After

"In the study, Poon and his colleagues use two types of nonassociative learning called habituation and desensitization to promote a better patient-ventilator interaction. Habituation refers to a person's decrease in responsiveness to a repeated stimulus. In terms of the fireworks example, you may learn to successfully "block out" or become more accustomed to the loud, recurring noises over time. On the other hand, desensitization is a person's diminished response to a second stimulus as a result of the first stimulus. For instance, if you became more accustomed to the loud fireworks through repeated sounds, your ability to hear other noises might have decreased, too."

In the “before” statement, the information being presented was unclear and too hard for me to understand. Once translated into everyday terminology, I could better understand the information and use this information.

            An example of non-academic source for medical writing would be Health & Fitness articles in the LA Times magazine. These articles talk about ways to stay mentally and physically healthy. The research and studies done to know how to do so, are performed by persons in the medical field who have made their discoveries into a readable magazine article.

• While talking to my local pharmacist, she says there are a few things you need to know when writing in the medical field.
•   Taking medical jargon and translating into readable material for someone not educated in the medical field.
• Know what you are talking about! You have to know every specific fact and scenario to write accurately.

·         Knowing what facts are important and the most up to date.

“If you know how to relate to your reader, it will help you become better in your career. You will not only know how to write more effectively, but also speak to clients or customers more effectively as well,” says my local pharmacist. The New England Journal of Medicine is an example of academic medical writing. The journal has articles about topics happening in the medical field today. This journal is getting medical information out to the public.

      When it comes to how much you will write in your career in the medical field, it will vary. While talking to my childhood pediatrician, he says that he very seldom writes a lot of information at one time. He can write down symptoms of his patients and also write down prescriptions, but he has never had to write a journal or article that would be posted for the public. According to owl.english.purdue.edu, “Biostatistics, journalism, medicine, English, public health, and pharmacy are fields that most medical writers tend to consult regularly.” This meaning that my pharmacist might write more regularly than my pediatrician.

     Writing skills are very important. Some areas of study will require more writing than others, but writing is key to getting information out to the public. If you are interested in the medical field, just remember that not everyone who reads your material will know exactly what you are trying to say unless you make your information readable and reliable.
